Celesta

The celesta is a Musical instrument of the family of the percussions, provided with a keyboard. Invented in 1886 by Auguste Mustel (1842/1919), it is an hybrid between the Glockenspiel and the Piano, the hammers actuated by the keys of the striking keyboard of the metal blades.

It is an instrument with dominant orchestral, used mainly in the Film music. He is especially played by a pianist, but sometimes also by a percussionnist if the difficulty of the partition is not large. Also used in Chamber music, there only exists very little of concertos written for him. He is generally used to give effect in the orchestral parts, to translate an environment. Its musical parts are often the doubling of a topic played the flute or toothing-stone, even sometimes a solo part in frightening features of orchestra.

The its obtained, though low in Harmonic S, is of a very great purity which is not without recalling the antiques musical boxes. In the orchestra, it is one of the acutest instruments! It goes up until against C of the piccolo, and in softness, whereas the flutist can give this extreme note only fortissimo.

Its serious notes are not very sound and sound a little bell (Ravel employs them with wonder in Laideronette empress of the pagodas of My Mother Oye ). On the other hand as of the medium and until the acute one, the celesta sounds also pure and crystalline lens which it is possible. It is thus often used for fairy-like, marvellous and celestial effects.

Tchaïkovski used it in the Danse of the fairy Dragée of sound Ballet Casse-Noisette , like Béla Bartók in its Musique for cords, percussion and celesta . In addition to these two great classics, in the Planets of Holst, the celesta holds a place privileged in the course and the orchestration of the movement devoted to the Neptune planet. It one of the percussion instruments is very much used also by the American type-setter John Williams.

Many artists of Pop music have recourse to this instrument: Bjork in Vespertine , Emilie Simon in the Walk of the emperor for example.
