Cecilia Thunder Fire
Cecilia (or Cecelia ) Fire Thunder (born the October 24th 1946 with Prick Ridge in the South Dakota) is a nurse states-unienne, member of the Amerindian tribe of the Oglala. From November 2nd, 2004 to June 29th, 2006, it is the first woman of its tribe to becoming president of the Oglala tribe of South Dakota. It is dislocated by the tribal council according to a procedure of Impeachment because of its opposition to the law of March 4th, 2006 prohibiting almost completely the Avortement in the State of South Dakota.
Before Ridge Prick
Born Cecilia Apple , it is resulting from a family of seven girls of the Indian reserve of Ridge Prick. She married Ben Fire Thunder with whom she had two wire.In the years 1960, its family is rehoused with Los Angeles where it succeeds of the studies of nurse.
Militance and political career
Cecilia Fire Thunder returns to Pine Ridge in 1987 and works at the hospital of the reserve. Vis-a-vis the violence domesticates which know of the women of the tribe and against the Alcoolisme, it creates association Sacred Circle .November 2nd, 2004, she was elected president of the tribe Oglala of South Dakota, the first woman of this tribe to be reached this station. After the vote by the Congress of the State in March 2006 of a law prohibiting the abortion, including in the event of Inceste or of Rape, she announced the project to open a private clinic of Family planning inside the Indian reserve. Announcing that Indian associations were not consulted, she testified before a commission to the federal Sénat that Amerindian of the United States on three was victim of a rape.
The tribal council suspends it its presidential functions on May 31st, 2006 and votes a legislation prohibiting the abortion on the territory of the reserve. June 29th, 2006, Fire Thunder is dislocated by a procedure of impeachment on the reasons which it did not have the capacity to create such a private clinic, that it had not consulted and had not obtained the permission of the council. The vice-president Alex White Plume succeeds to him until the elections of November 2006.
This dismissal brought a sufficient notoriety to him to militate against the law anti-abortion of the State of South Dakota. November 7th, 2006, the proposal to prohibit the IVG in South Dakota was disallowed by the citizens.
