The caves of Médous are natural caves, without trace of human presence prehistoric, dug by an underground river. Their natural decoration, rich in stalactites, stalagmites or petrified cascades… made them famous. Their development goes back to 1948. It is indeed, at that time, which their exploration by speleologists concerned begins from connaîte the origin of their water.
A tourist site, old place of pilgrimage
In fact initially specificities of this natural site attract the visitors. The site is thus opened to the public since 1951 and part of the visit is carried out on board a boat.
But, at the 18th century, the site arouses already the interest of the pilgrims. Indeed, the Virgin Mary would have appeared there in the presence of a small shepherd then in that of the Liloye widow. A vault accommodates, today still, the possible pilgrim.
