Cave of Aurignac

The cave of Aurignac is a Grotte Paléolithique superior located on the commune of Aurignac, department of the Haute-Garonne, in area the Midday-Pyrenees (France).

History

The cave was discovered in 1852 per Jean-Baptiste Bonnemaison and was studied starting from 1860 share Edouard Lartet, one of the inventors of prehistoric science . Site éponyme of the Aurignacien, this cave is of a great richness Archéologique in particular with regard to the vestiges aurignacians.

The cave

The cave was occupied at three different periods:
  • first human occupation in Aurignacien;
  • occupation by the wild Fauna;
  • new human use as place of Burial to the Chalcolithique.

Many objects resulting from the cave are exposed to the Musée of the Prehistory of Aurignac.
