Causse of Sauveterre

The Causse of Sauveterre is a calcareous plate pertaining to the Grands Causses. Encircled in north by the valley of the Batch (deep from 200 to 400 m), the causse dominates of 500 m the Gorges of the Tarn over 60 km, in the south. Its surface borders the 60000 [[Hectare ha]].
The Causse of Sauveterre is divided into 3 natural areas:
- the causse peeled , in the east: Deserted ic, stony with tops exceeding 1100 Mr.
- sometimes the wooded causse , in the center: a more broken relief, pointed tops or round-offs intersected broad or narrow dry valleys dug by Affluent S with the Batch and Tarn. The Forêt occupies an important place there and altitude oscillates there between 780 and 1000 Mr.
- the causse of Massegros , in south-west: Pasture S stripped ( devèzes ), forests of pine S, rocks overhanging the Tarn, it is a landscape extremely varied and concentrated on a surface limited to a average Altitude of 850 Mr.
The term “ sauveterre ” means “safe ground”. The causse was a Sauveté created by the Monastère of Holy-Enimie and consequently free from any influence seigneuriale.
