The United States

In the beginning, a caucus is a meeting, in particular of people whose objective is to promote a change of Politique or of organization.

In the context of the presidential elections to the the United States, this term ended up indicating the gathering of local political militants of a party to designate a candidate with the nomination of this party in the race with the presidency. In a system of caucus in several stages, the local militants, who carry on an activity at the level of a polling station, choose delegates who will represent them with the meetings organized at the level of the county; these meetings will make it possible in their turn to designate delegates with conventions of the State. These conventions select then the delegates with the national convention of the party which will designate the official candidate. The objective of the system of the caucus is to indicate, by the means of the choice of the delegates, the preference of the members of the party in each State. That causes to democratize the candidate nomination to the presidency, since it is especially on the level of the polling station that the preferences are expressed, at the beginning of the process.
