Catholic priest
See also: Priest
A catholic priest (of the old Greek πρεσϐύτερος presbyteros “old”, by the Latin presbyter ) is a man in charge of the liturgical service in the Catholic religion.
The priest is the subject of a call of God. One speaks about particular Vocation. The understanding of the call to the priesthood and the training of the priest are done with the Séminaire. If the call of God is confirmed by the seminarist and the Church, the seminarist is ordered to deacon then priest.
Sacraments
The priest is the minister of some Sacrement S:- Eucharistie ;
- Confession;
- Sacrament of the Patients;
The priest acts In Persona Christi : in the person of Christ. Jesus-Christ is the Sovereign Priest who exerts True priesthood.
On the other hand, the priest can manage neither the Confirmation (except for the Eastern Catholic churches, or unless having received of it mandate punctually by its bishop), nor the Ordination, which is spring of a bishop.
As regards the marriage, the Latin Church considers traditionally that they are the husbands who mutually confer the sacrament, the priest being only the obligatory witness, and this only since the Concile of Thirty. The priest in load of a Paroisse is called Curé (or Recteur in Brittany and in some other cases), the priests who assist it are named Vicaires. A priest can be attached to no parish. The presbytery is the company flat formerly reserved (X) to the priest (S) of a parish. It was in general near the church.
A monk (brother or monk) can also receive the priesthood. It is necessary to have received the priesthood to be able to become bishop or Archevêque.
Statute of the priests
The statute of the priests with respect to the State depends on each country.
In France, the ministers of religion have a certain legal recognition, independently of the religion to which they belong.
Since the 10th century, the normal mode of the priests of the Latin Church is the celibacy. He is admitted, although little running, that laic married in Judicial separation and not having a minor can be ordered priest. Certain catholic priests, coming from the Communion Anglican, are authorized with being married.
The overload of parishes is sometimes imposing: thus Bernard Fellay tells that he knew a 65 year old priest who was to be useful in 92 parishes. Moreover, there would be according to him 20% of the priests who are ordered according to the rite tridentin.
The Prêtre S diocesans of France are remunerated by the gifts of the Fidèle S. They do not perceive wages taken directly on the Sunday searches or at the time of the sacraments carried out. One does not speak besides about wages but about allowance. A priest touches approximately 950 €.
There is no evolution of wages during the life of a Prêtre, except that of the cost of living. The French priests, except churches of the legal settlement, perceive the same allowance, whatever the function (priest in parish, vice-chancellor of cathedral, priest, vicar…), only the bishop perceives a larger allowance related to its load (displacements, sundries…), approximately 1500 €.
The married men can be validly ordered in the Eastern Churches. On the other hand, once ordered, the priests cannot marry any more, and the bishops are selected only among the single people.
