Catholic institute of arts and trades

General information

The catholic Institute of arts and trades (ICAM) was founded in 1898 with Lille by the Jésuites at the request of the industrialists of the area, with in particular the financial aid of Philibert Vrau.

It trains engineers general practitioners over five years, distributed in the following way:

  • two years of preparatory cycle integrated on the basis of program of PTSI (mathematical, industrial physical sciences and sciences).
  • three years of cycle school (theoretical and practical courses, training course engineer, experiment (see low), science report).

Currently, the ICAM is present at Lille (since 1898), at Nantes (since 1988) and at Toulouse (since 1993). The relations which the group wove with other schools extend in many countries (in particular the Spain and the the United Kingdom).

The engineers who leave the ICAM work mainly in Production but also find work in Research and development, in Quality assurance, Project management, Conseil, Industrial data processing

The 3 sites propose an identical formation, the diploma delivered by the 3 sites of the ICAM is recognized like identical since 2003 by the Commision of the titles of engineer.

The ICAM belongs to the Groupe ICAM which gathers in addition to the 3 ICAM, the STI which are dies of training of engineer in alternation. The director of Group ICAM is since 2005 Jean-Michel Viot, which succeeded Guy Carpier.

One has noted an opening in Africa for several years, in particular under the inspiration of Guy Carpier.

Specificities

the computer-integrated manufacturing is a share of the teaching which is exempted there. From its design Jesuit, the ICAM tries to inculcate in its pupils not to dissociate the ideal models of reality, and this is why part of the courses of industrial sciences is devoted to the Productique, like with the Métrologie inter alia.

The inspiration Ignatienne is present in certain aspects of teaching, in particular:

  • expériment the consists of a rupture with its practices, during several months (generally 4), where one deals with not-school project. It can be a question of a project associative Humanitaire or for example, the goal being to live a strong and formative experiment, generally abroad.
  • Human formation . French or the philosophy which one can find in other similar schools is replaced by work on oneself or in group, with formations with the management or courses of history of sciences…

Official reception of the School

Every year the NIGHT ICAM takes place on the three sites at the same date (generally the last weekend of January). 4500 people (on average by school) gather the one night time in the buildings of the ICAM on more than 2000 m ². The latter are invests for the preparation, one week before the night, in order to decorate the school according to the topic which changes each year. The topic orchestrates the decoration of ten room leaving thus various environments, various musical styles.

She is recognized like the greatest evening coed of each area (northern of Paris, the great west, Toulouse region)}.

In addition to the fact of bringing together students, it represents also a meeting between industrialists, old student, and artists. Indeed, each year, night ICAM receives a great number of famous artists who animate the evening.

It constitutes also a true project of promotion, which enters directly the training of engineer general practitioner that the ICAM proposes. In first year of school of engineer, promotion elects an office of the night which is charged to supervise the project. Then, promotion is divided into several commissions (déco, élec-sound, sponsors…) and in bars (charged to build the bars).
