Catherine de Bragance

Catherine Henriette de Bragance November 25th 1638 with Villa Viçosa - † November 30th 1705 with Lisbon), or Catarina de Bragança was the wife of King Charles II of England.

It was born in Vila Viçosa, with the Ducal Palate residence of the dukes of Bragance, with the Portugal, girl of King Jean IV of Portugal (then duke of Bragance) and of Louise de Guzman.

Portugal being made independent of the Spain, his/her father reaches the throne on February 1st 1640. Catherine is promised in marriage to Charles II of England, which she marries the May 3rd or the May 21st 1662, with Portsmouth. Its dowry brought Tangier and Bombay under Britannique control. This marriage was not a particularly judicious choice since it, roman catholic, not being able to take to share with a religious service Anglican, crowned forever queen.

In spite of the reputation of gift juan of its husband, Catherine forever put at the world a heir in life, although it had several pregnancies, the last in 1669. Its position was not easily bearable, Charles continued to have children of its many mistresses, but he insisted that his wife is treated with respect, and refused to divorce. With her death, Catherine remained in England under the reign of Jacques II of England and is gone back to Portugal under the reign of Guillaume III and Marie II. She died in Lisbon in 1705 after having exerted regency.

Catherine introduced in England, the habit of drinking the. She very popular and was liked of the people. The name of the village of Queens to New York was given in homage to this lady.
