The Sainte-Marie cathedral of Pampelune
History
Romance church primitive remains some capitals, of the Portail S and the Cloître, exposed to the museum of Navarre. This cathedral was built between 1100 and 1127, work of the Romance cloister being prolonged until in 1137.
In 1280 was undertaken the construction of a new Gothic cloister , which arrived to us. Its construction lasted until in 1375, parallel to the rise in appendices of the cathedral: refectory, kitchen, vault Barbazgna.
Mow, in 1391, the nave of the Romance cathedral of the 12th century crumbled. Only the frontage, the Bedside and the cloister escaped the disaster. As of 1394, Charles III Noble the (1387 - 1425) made rebuild on the same site a new Gothic cathedral, by preserving the cloister completed little front time. Rebuilding works were prolonged until in 1501.
At the 18th century, Ventura Rodríguez rebuilt the principal frontage in the styles neo-classic baroque and , then with the mode.
The nave
The Nef counts only two stages: large arcades and windows. The sobriety of the veins, large surfaces of naked wall give him the stripped aspect of the Navarrese Gothic.
Of plan with three naves, a cross of Transept, with a polygonal Apse, including one déambulatoire. In front of the worked grid which closes the sanctuary, draws up the tomb in Albâtre ordered in 1416 by the king Charles III Noble the, founder of the cathedral, for itself and its wife Eléonore.
The sculptor tournaisien Janin Lome, educated of the funerary art of Dijon, knew to personalize the faces of lying and to vary the attitudes and the costumes of crying.
In a vault of the déambulatoire on the right, a Retable hispano-Flemish, end of the 15th century.
The Cloister
It dates from the S with elegant sometimes surmounted Gothic bays gâbles which give to this Cloître a great lightness. The carved tombs and them doors of the various dependences are interesting. The Dormition of the Vierge appearing in the tympanum of the door of access to the cloister is of an expression almost baroque. In the wing Is, the vault “Barbazane” (of Barbazàn, the bishop which made set up its tomb) presents a beautiful lierne vault of the 14th century.
Southern part, the “Door Invaluable” is a showpiece of the sculpture of the same time: the tympanum and the lintel, devoted to the life of the Virgin, are carved with much smoothness; on both sides of the door the two statues of a fort are answered beautiful Annonciation.
