Cathedral Saint-Pierre and Saint-Georges de Bamberg

The Cathedral of Bamberg (German: Bamberger Dom, official name Bamberger Dom St Peter und St Georg), classified with the world heritage of humanity by UNESCO, is the most imposing religious building of Bamberg. It constitutes one of the architectural monuments most known of Germany and with summer the most famous benchmark of Bamberg since its completion during XIIIe century. The cathedral is under the administration of the Roman Catholic church and is the seat of archevéché of Bamberg.

The cathedral is of Romance style late with four imposing towers. It founded in 1004 by the emperor Henri II, completed in 1012 and was devoted the May 6th 1012. It thereafter was partially destroyed by a fire in 1081. The new cathedral, built by St Otto de Bamberg, was devoted in 1111, and received during XIIIe century its current late Romance form.

The cathedral is 94 m long, 28 m broad, 26 m in height, and the four turns reach each one 81 m in height. Among all the works of the cathedral the splendid marble tomb, cut between 1499 and 1513, where its founder and of his wife rests, the Cunigunde empress must be mentioned because regarded as the chief of work of the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. Another of the treasures of the cathedral is the equestrian statue known like the Rider of German Bamberg (: Der Bamberger Reiter). This statue can represent the Hungarian king Etienne Ier, and would probably go back to around the year 1200.
