Cathedral Notre-Dame de Verdun

The cathedral Notre-Dame de Verdun is a catholic cathedral located at Verdun in Lorraine (France). It is more than thousand-year-old since its current structure dates from the year 990.

History

  • Towards 330, holy Saintin, évangélise Verdun and founds a place of worship, church dedicated to Saint Pierre and Saint Paul.
  • 457 : Pulchrone saint makes set up a cathedral inside the ramparts on the ruins of an old Roman building. Several buildings will be built and destroyed on this site before the construction of the current cathedral.

  • 990: the Heimon bishop orders the construction of a new cathedral according to the novel-Rhenish Plan (a Nef, two Transept S, two Abside S opposed, each one flanked of two turn-bell-towers).
  • in XIIe century, the Garin architect builds the Eastern chorus, opens the two gates Saint Jean and of the Lion and sets up the crypts. It will be devoted by the Pope Eugene III in 1147. It is at this period that seems built the cloister, in the South, near the ravine.

  • the cathedral was modified of XIVe century to the Rebirth:

- The flat ceiling out of wooden is replaced by a vault and the windows are agrandies.
- The cathedral is also decorated frescos. The first Jubé is built and the turns are capped with flèches.
- Gothic side chapels are also added in the sides of the nave; the last side chapel, dedicated to the Assumption is built of 1522 with 1530.
- The cloister, as-with him, is entirely reconstuit in the Gothic style blazing.
  • on April 2nd, 1755, the lightning ignites the roof and the turns whose arrows will never be rebuilt…

Since 1760, strongly damaged by the flames the cathedral is transformed in the traditional style (worked over again nave, organ, turns Are.) and in particular splendid the Baldachin Rococo.
  • the First World War touches the cathedral between 1916 and 1917, in particular destroying the Eastern solid mass, whose turns since were not rebuilt. The restoration of 1920 to 1936 will allow an updating of Romance elements as well as the redécouverte of the crypt Is. The cathérale D-is inaugurated in 1935. In July 1946, Mgr Roncalli (future Pape Jean XXIII comes to crown Notre Dame de Verdun.
  • 1990 was the millenium of the oldest cathedral of Lorraine.
