The Cathédrale Notre-Dame Sainte-Marie is located in the commune of Dax in France.
History
At the end of the 13th century, in full boom for the city, the évêché makes build a series of ecclesistic buildings, of which a new cathedral built on old a Romance Sanctuaire , become too exiguous. The Gothic building crumbled in 1646, and only of this time splendid Portail of the Apostles remains, in the arm of the Transept Northern, and classified in 1884.
Description
High and broad, this door with pier 12 8 meters meters presents a whole of Sculpture S of any beauty, rather rare in the South of France, and this in spite of some regrettable mutilations which have occurred in the past. The current building was built in a modern Greek style at the end of the 17th century. The principal frontage and the southern side present a massive aspect, almost austere. On the other hand, the northern side, giving on a pleasant small square of the historical center, does not miss a charm, in spite of a certain stiffness. With transept crossing the dome is decorated of Peinture S. In the chorus, were preserved beautiful the Stalle S of the Chanoine S dating from the old cathedral (16th century). The Master furnace bridge and the furnace bridge of the Virgin, in Marbre of colors of the middle of the 18th century are the work of the sculptors Avignon are born from origin Suisse, the Frères Mazzetti. The dresser of Organ S, of the end of 17th, was carried out by Caular, local cabinetmaker; this dresser restored recently is one of most beautiful of France. The building preserves also several tables of which “Jesus and his Disciple S” of Honthorst, Flemish school of the 17th century, and “Worship of the Shepherds” of Hans von Aachen of the end of the 16th century.
