The Catégories are a work allotted to Aristote which one at the head places of the Organon. Aristote starts by posing some fundamental distinctions, then analyzes the simplest elements of the proposals (the study of the proposal is the object Of interpretation , second book of Organon).

Basic distinctions

  • Homonymous/synonymous/Homonymous paronym
    • : what has of commun run only the Nom, but the statement of the gasoline, the Définition of what it is , for a thing, to be such, is clean;
    • Synonymous: what has the name commun, and the statement of the gasoline is the same one;
    • Paronym: what draws from a another name in connection with its name by flexional differentiation.
  • What is said:
    • in combination: “(it) man runs”;
    • without combination: “man”, “runs”.
  • What is:
    • what is said of a subject and is not in any subject;
    • what is in a subject, but is not said of any subject;
    • what is said of a subject, and is in a subject;
    • what is neither in a subject, nor is not said of a subject: gasolines.
  • Species, kind, difference:
    • all that is said prédiqué will also say subject;
    • for the distinct kinds, the differences also are of distinct species;
    • of the arranged kinds the ones under the others can have the same differences;
    • the higher kinds prédiquent lower kinds.

Categories

Aristote gives here a list of ten categories: gasoline, quantified, qualified, relative, some share, at one moment, to be in a position, to have, act, pâtir.
To this list are added the opposites, the opposites, the former one, the simultaneous one and mobility.

Gasoline

Attention to distinguish the direction given well here from the direction given in the article Substance (Aristote). There is indeed here a problem of interprétation.
  • With the fundamental direction, first, the gasoline is what does not say a subject nor is not in a subject, but is the subject: such Man given, such Horse donné.
  • gasolines second: it with what belongs the gasolines to the direction first, species and kinds of these espèces.
Any gasoline thus seems to mean one this ( tode Ti ). The gasolines first indicate something of individual and numerically one. The gasolines second rather indicate one qualified, but one qualified in the field of a gasoline and which is said of a multiplicity.

Quantified

The relative one

Is relative what is such as what it is itself is known as being of another thing, or relative to another thing. For example, largest is known as larger than .
The habitus ( hexis ), the provision, the feeling, the Connaissance is the relative ones.

Quality

Aristote distinguishes four kinds of quality:
  • habitus and the provision;
  • capacity or incapacity to make or suffer;
  • emotional qualities and affections;
  • the figure and the form.

Qualified come from qualities in manner Paronymique.

To act and suffer it
