Cateau-Cambrésis
Cateau- Cambrésis is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Its inhabitants is called Catésiens.
Geography
Brood in the middle of a green area between Hainaut, Cambrésis and Thiérache, Cateau-Cambrésis is staged on the slopes of the valley of the Selle. The commune is located on RN 43 at 22 km of Cambrai and 35 km of Valencian.
Announced by far by its two large Bell-tower S, church and Belfry, it was an important historical crossroads.
History
The locality results from the regrouping of two hamlets, Péronne and Vendelgies, this last having a Forteresse out of wood: the Sainte-Marie Castle. It is placed at a strategic place between two Roman ways.The emperor Otton III allows in 1001 évêché of Cambric to reinforce defenses of the Sainte-Marie Castle and to make a strengthened city of it, to hold a market to with it and to beat currency there. By doing this, its name changes then into Chastel in Cambrésis, which is transformed then into its current name.
The various Cambric bishops who follow one another follow a policy which makes it possible the town of be prosperous during the Middle Ages, in spite of several seats and destruction, each time followed by a rebuilding.
The English conquer the city at the 15th century, and preserve it until in 1449, where Dunois take it again.
François I {{er}} remains there in 1521 then in 1543. In 1555, the French plunder it to be avenged for warm welcome that Charles-Quint had received there. In 1559, the France and the Spain sign the Traités of Cateau-Cambrésis. The two nations are represented by their respective sovereigns Philippe II of Spain and Henri II of France. The treaties leave in France the fortified towns of the Sum like three évêchés (Metz, Toul and Verdun).
In 1642, Cateau-Cambrésis is occupied by the French troops. Louis XIII makes dismantle the doors and the ramparts. The urban structure however preserves its plan with narrow inclined streets radiating starting from the small island which the Abbaye Bénédictin E constituted.
The locality is attached to the French crown in 1678 by the Traité of Nimègue. During the wars of the Revolution and Empire, the city is occupied in 1793 by the Austrians then in 1814 by the Russians who settle there for 2 years.
The First World War causes important destruction at the city. In 1914, the battle of Cateau (August 26th) opposes the British to the Germans, slowing down the latter and allowing the regrouping of the French troops for the Bataille of the Marne. In October 1918, which there remains of the city is almost entirely destroyed by the German cannonades. The rebuilding is made almost with identical during the Entre-deux-guerres.
At the time of the Second world war, it is crossed in May 1940 by Rommel with the head of its Panzer Division, after some engagements with its accesses.

It should be noted that the belfry was not retained under the world heritage when the belfries of North and Belgium were classified, with the great despair of Catésiens.
