Catarratto bianco lucido

The catarratto bianco lucido is a Italian Cépage of white grapes of the family of the Catarratto.

Origin and geographical distribution

It comes from the south of the Italy. The type of vine is known since the 17th century on the island Sicily.

It is classified auxiliary type of vine in DOC. Alcamo, Contessa Entellina, Menfi, Sambuca di Sicilia, Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca. It encépagement forms also part of Marsala.

It is classified recommended in province of Agrigente, of Caltanissetta, Catane, Enna, Messine, Palermo, Raguse, Syracuse and Trapani. In 1990, it covered in Sicily 9  780 ha.

Characters ampelographic

  • End of the young white cottony branch with dyed with carmine edging.
  • Young fluffy sheets, greenish white with bronzed reflections.
  • adult Sheets, with 5 lobes with major higher sines, a petiolar sine out of V closed or on board overlapping, of the teeth angular, average, in two series a aranéeux limb.

Farming aptitudes

Maturity is of third time: 30 days after the chasselas.

Technological potential

The bunches are average and the bays are of small or average size. The bunch is cylindrical. The type of vine is of good strength and a good fertility.

It gives white wines pale to yellow amber and enough alcoholic containing 13% flight or more. It is often used to prepare Vermouth.
