Cataphile

A cataphile is an amateur of clandestine visits of the underground Carrières of Paris or Catas (improperly named Catacombes of Paris). A book ( the city of the cataphiles, anthropological Mission in the undergrounds of Paris ) launched this name and popularized the phenomenon in 1983. There exist several groups and associations of cataphiles in particular “Cataphiles associated”. Since the Years 1980, many incursions and clandestine festivals (Tribes rock'n'roll, connected, young, students in behavior of exploration and provided with multiple models of lamps: flashlights, lamps Acétylène) take place in the Catas, under the aegis of some accustomed aguerris often holding a plan specific to the cataphiles underground galleries and knowing some exit and entrance points.

By extension, it is also an amateur of all the career underground S and spaces.

The cataphile term is a Néologisme étymologiquement resulting from the Greek katkiros ”, the kingdom of deaths, and “ philein ”, to like, suffix in “- phile”, that which likes.

The cataphiles are distinguished primarily from the Spéléologue S in what the passion of the cataphiles rather aims to the exploration of the underground places built by the hand of the man and thus presenting a historical attraction : it is what one calls in erudite terms the Subterranologie, i.e. the study of the Infrastructure S of our large villes.
The " cataphilie" became finally total name gathering cataphilie and Subterranologie in the " jargon parisien" , because of closing of the Parisian careers, and the evolution of the cataphile activity (in the careers of province and in Paris within the framework of total urban exploration: roofs, industrial waste lands, given up buildings, under grounds in any kinds, churches and other monuments). The cataphile is distinguished from the Toiturophile, amateur of air walks (visits of roofs of building, of the high parts of churches, climbing of the cranes…). These two populations find in the common activity of the urban exploration .
