Catalog HR
The catalogs HR (for Harvard Observatory, revised photometry ) is a catalog of star S brilliant compiled by the American Astronome Edward Charles Pickering and published for the first time in 1908. The catalog is limited in magnitude and limits to stars of lower Magnitude photographic or equalizes to 6,5, which corresponds grosso-modo to stars visible with the naked eye. The catalog comprises 9 110 entries, of form HR NNNN, where NNNN represents an integer not no less than or equal to 9110. Nomenclature HRP NNNN was sometimes used in the literature, but is depreciated today. Nowadays, the name of catalog HR of a star is still used to name this one if it belongs to the catalog. On these 9 110 reference, 9 096 objects are stars of our galaxy. The 14 remaining objects proved to be extragalactic Nova E or objects. They were preserved in the later editions of the catalog not to have to change numeration it.
The stars of catalog HR are classified by order ascending of Right ascension for the year 1900. The first stars of the catalog thus form part of the constellations of Cassiopée, Andromède, the Poisson and so on. The catalog also gives designations of its stars in those of the other catalogs contemporaries, like the Bonner Durchmusterung and older, and includes/understands designations of Bayer and Flamsteed, as well as the photographic magnitude of each star and them spectral Type.
Catalog HR is a precursor of the Bright Star Catalogs Université Yale ( litt. “catalogs brilliant stars”). This last was published in 1930 and was republished several times since, the most recent edition to date (2005) going back to 1992. It takes again same stars that those of the catalog HR, of which it keeps the same reference. The stars of the Bright Star Catalog are sometimes named form BS NNNN or BSC NNNN, NNNN being the same number as that of corresponding entry HR. Name BS is tolerated, although name HR is preferred to him, name BSC is not more accepted, but is still sometimes in the older literature.
The Bright Star Catalog exists from now on under electronic format. It includes/understands a table of correspondence with the other catalogs frequently used (SAO, Bonner, Henry Draper, etc), and contains data much more complete than its predecessor. It thus includes/understands data of Parallaxe and own Mouvement of stars, their coordinates B1900.0 and J2000.0, the possible characteristics of variability, more precise data on the spectral Type as well as the Classification of Morgan-Keenan, the photometric data in the bands UBVRI and the indices of color, as well as information on stars belonging to binary systems or multiple (component count, separation and magnitude of each member). Many other information like the membership of such or such cluster of stars is present.
