Catalaunes
The catalaunes or " catalauni" is a Celtic tribe which occupied, starting from the age of iron, the center of the current department of the Marne (the approximate triangle of the current cities of Epernay - Vitry-le-François - Châlons-in-Champagne) and north is current department of the Haute-Marne.
The people of the catalauni were a long time tributary of their powerful neighbors the Rèmes, of which the political center was Durocortorum , the current town of Rheims.
One discovered some oppida of plain and many rural villages on the territory of the catalaunes, whose capital was Durocatalaunum (the fortress of the catalaunes in Celtic toponymy) which is Champagne Chalons today.
