Catalan ass

The Catalan ass is a race of ass indigenous of the Catalogne, where it is called ruc català or ESA català .

History

In the beginning the Catalan ass is a subspecies of Equus asinus somaliensis , which will be the ancestor of all the asses of the the Middle East, and later of Europe. It is closely related to the asses Moroccan and Zamora - léonais.

The race seems to be very old: Pline Old the notes that there is of it with the plain of Vic, then called ausetans . It is however in danger of extinction, its utility in agriculture decreasing, as it is the case for many of other animals of the farm. There was formerly until: 50000 Catalan asses, but there remain only approximately 500 today about it, including 100 apart from Catalonia.

It is the ancestor of the North-American asses , being often mixed with other races to improve the physical characteristics of them.

Description

The Catalan ass is tall of 1,65 m and can weigh up to 500 kg. Its peeling is short and black on all the safe body around the mouth, of the eyes and on the chest. In winter it becomes maroon and more length, to protect the animal from the cold. Its ears always point in top, never at the sides.

Associated culture

The catalanists assert the ruc català as a Catalan symbol, in opposition to the Taureau, symbol of the Spain. Some consider it a true symbol of Catalonia, and others find that it is a manner of ridiculing the Spanish symbol. One has found for several years much stickers on the cars and motor bikes representing the Catalan ass on bottom of the Drapeau of Catalonia.
