Cat island
The island Cat is a island of the archipelago of the the Bahamas. There is on this island more the high summit of the Bahamas: the Alvernia Mount, high of 63 meters, on which is located a monastery called the Hermitage .
After having lived of the production of cotton, the economy turned to the Agriculture which constitutes the lifestyle of the majority of the inhabitants. One also collects there the bark of Cascarille, known for his medicinal and aromatic properties, which is exported towards Italy where it returns, in particular, in the composition of the Campari.
The island counted 1647 inhabitants (in 2000).
The principal places of dwelling are Arthur' S Town (where the house of childhood of Sidney Poitier is), Orange Creek, and Port Howe.
The Cat island has an airport (code AITA: CAT).
History of the island
The island owes its name either to the pirate Arthur Catt, or with its form which resembles cat-like sitted. Nevertheless, lasting of many years, the island was called San Salvador, and was famous only in 1926.
The first European occupants were the Loyaliste S fleeing the American Révolution in 1783.
