Castro de San Cibrán de Lás

The Castro de San Cibrao de Las , Lansbricae , known also under the name of " In Cidade" , is a settlement of the last time of the Culture of Castros which is the subject of archaeological excavations, it is one of the castros greater dimensions as of those which one finds on the territory of current the Galicia. According to the archaeological studies one can define one time of continuous occupation of the 2nd century before Jesus Christ until IIe after Jesus Christ, with possible later sporadic occupations.

In the actual position of knowledge it is second Castro of the current Galicia, it would make approximately 10 hectares (and), and that of Santa Tegra approximately 20 hectares.

Localization

Located at 18 kilometers of the town of Ourense, it occupies of the grounds belonging to the communes of Punxin and San Amaro, more precisely in the parishes respectively of San Xoán de Ourantes and San Cibrao de Las. It is placed on a small rise has 473 meters above the sea level, vis-a-vis Goes up of San Trocado of 550 meters altitude, on which one also found remainders of Castro of the initial period of the Culture of Castros. Castro de San Trocado prevents a direct sight on the river Miño.

Archaeological excavations

The study of this Castro started with a first visit on the site of Florentino López Cuevillas accompanied by Vicente Risco in 1921. Following the observations, of this first visit, they requested the authorizations necessary to make official excavations, authorizations obtained the following year.

First excavations (1922 - 1925)

In 1922 López Cuevillas directed the realization of the first observations of the pregnant most interior. One thus discovered the foundations of a construction of square form. That also showed that this enclosure is delimited by a simple wall. This work continued until the year 1925 and was centered on the south-eastern zone of the second enclosure. In this zone were updated of constructions of various types: elliptic forms , circular, Oval S, rectangular and Carré be in addition to the fountain.

Excavation second and third campaigns (1948 - 1950)

From the year 1948 Xaquín Lorenzo, with the collaboration and the indications of López Cuevillas, directed two excavation campaigns at the top of the site, during which one put at the day of circular constructions and rectangular constructions as well as the doors of raising and the West of the external wall.

Abandonment and recovery with a stage of recovery and cleaning of the site

In 1953, the participants in the 3rd national congress of archeology visited the site and recognized its importance and its " monumentalité". This recognition did not prevent that follow one another of the years of abandonment and depreciation of the site. A few years after Xesús Ferro Couselo succeeded has to stop the massive extraction of stone which was made for the streets of Carballiño and of the surroundings. In 1980, by building a football field near the Castro , it was put at the day a layer Paléolithique. From this moment there of work of maintenance and cleaning of the whole of the site were undertaken and thus began a new stage of recovery.

" découvertes" of these excavations are preserved at the archaeological museum of the province of Ourense.
