Castoroides ohioensis

The giant beaver ( Castoroïde ohioensis ) was a long beaver 3 meters living in North America; it disappeared approximately 10.000 years ago. It probably did not build a Barrage because of its size. Some Paléontologue S thus think that its disappearance is the consequence of that of its biotope, large the Marécage S. On the other hand, its smaller cousin, which builds stoppings and created its environment, did not encounter the same difficulties.

Description

Its physiognomical characteristics were impressive, up to 2,4 m and nearly 217 kg, what to compete with certain bears present in these areas. Morphologiquement, they were equipped with pointed incisors and of a cranium lengthened contrary to the contemporary beavers, they also had a round tail the such Muskrat.

Extinction

Its extinction would go back to close to 10 000 years, at the time of the last glacial era, they would have accompanied the ancestral mammoths and other horses. Other theories seem to incline for a common extinction of these species due on arrival of the man towards these grounds, not having been able to adapt rather quickly to this new ambivalent species, they would have disappeared.

The oldest fossils go back to 70 000 years and were found close to Toronto, others were found in the Yukon.
