Castle of the dukes of Trémoïlle

The castle of the dukes of Trémoïlle is located at Thouars (Two-Sevres).

Strategically placed on a natural headland dominating a meander of the Thouet, it has a principal building, an interior court, an orangery, a vault and stables.

History

In the beginning, it was about a strong Château. At the time of the arrival of the dukes of Trémoïlle, a change intervened: Marie of the Tower of Auvergne, finding it lake and cold, decided to shave it to assemble this castle with its coupled vault. This building became a prison during a time, collecting in particular good number of communards (the Commune 1871).

The principal building of the castle accommodates from now on a public Collège. The stables, which go back to one posterior time to that of the castle and the collegial one, shelter the council school of Visual arts, the regional center resistance and freedom and the center of geological interpretation of Thouarsais. Masses are celebrated in the collegial one (Fraternity Saint Pie X). The enclosure of the protected court is not used for the moment.
