Castle of the Beams

the castle of the Beams is a strong Château ruins some and important a tourist site of Provence of the Beam-of-Provence in the department of the Rhone delta.

History

The castle is set up at the 11th century, for the lords of Beams.

Of 1372 with 1399, Raimond de Turenne is the lord of the places. During 12th and 13th centuries, the Beams were an important place between culture and policy of the Provence medieval because of power of the reigning family, although often struck by the local wars, in particular the baussenques Guerres which made rage between 1145 and 1162 for the succession of Provence.

In 1426, the Beams are attached to the Comté of Provence, before this one is not definitively attached to the crown of France in 1486.

In 1528, the castle is managed by the Connétable of Montmorency and of 1562 with 1598, it is again touched by the wars of religion. It is finally dismantled in 1632 and dark in the lapse of memory.

Structure

The castle is built on the part is cliff, on a rock piton which dominates the village.

Probably Xe, XIe and XIIe century S, the fortress is provided with a rectangular Donjon of the 13th century which is the part best preserved.

The home comprises rooms Troglodytique S cut in the rock.

It is surrounded of the turns “Sarrazin E”, “Paravelle” and of the “turn of the Hampers” (“Horns” in Provençal).

There exist also the vestiges of a vault and a vast external enclosure.
