Castle of Wittschloessel
The Château of Wittschlœssel is located at the locality Wittschlœssel (small lock) , on the commune of Dambach, in the Département of the Low-Rhine.
History
Built at the 13th century under the name " Schmalenstein" , the castle approaches rather a tower of guard dominating the valley of Obersteinbach. It was to be a fort supplementing the safety of the Château of Schœneck.
Mentioned only in 1657 at the time of a description of limit of seigniory, the castle is a possession of the Lichtenberg then Eckbrecht de Dürckheim.
Destroyed in 1677, the history of this castle, been dependant on the Castle of Schœneck, is little known.
Vestiges
Installed on a rock peak (440 meters), there remains of the castle only some vestiges of sandstone walls.
The ruin is made up of two rocks on the top of the mountain. Between the two rocks is a driven out room. One sees holes of beam in the rocks as well as the remainders of the wall of a leaning building.
