Castle of Waroux
The castle of Waroux is a castle located street of Waroux at Alleur (common of Ans, in the Province of Liege, Belgium).
The name of Waroux evokes terrible the Guerre of Awans and Waroux which divided the Noblesse hesbignone of 1298 to 1335.
The current building is of medieval origin as attest some the Donjon at square base and the circular wall of Silex. The entry is contrary to the keep and the interior court of polygonal form Marie the brick and the Freestone. Waroux is one of the rare Belgian castles of circular form.
The ground of Waroux, seigniory dependant on the County of Looz to the XIIIe century, belonged to the family of Waroux before passing by marriage in 1525 to Richard of Merode (+ 1539) which married Agnès de Warfusée, rams of Waroux. Their Guillaume son, then his/her Jean son - become count de Waroux in 1623 -, and another Jean (wire of the first) followed one another. The Jean last being deceased without descent, the property passed to Itel or Eitel-Frederic of Merode - count de Merode de Waroux, count of Villers-on-Injures & Icherenne, etc - then to his/her Alexandre son who had only three girls. According to bricks gone back to 1696 and decorated with the armorial bearings Clercx, one supposes that the three sisters Merode sold Waroux to Michel Clercx during the last decade of the XVIIe century.
The family of Clercx de Waroux, which occupied the castle until the beginning of the XXe divergent century them sources as for the exact date: 1904, 1925 or 1927 -, sold the good with the family Everard de Harzir; the heirs to the widow of Francis Everard de Harzir demolished castle which was acquired in 1986 by Doctor Leon Janssis. This last resold it in January 2005 with the commune of Ans.
The castle is currently occupied by offices and meeting rooms; one organizes there also cultural events (exposure Folon in April and May 2006).
In April, May and June 2007, an exposure paid homage to the sculptor Auguste Rodin which one celebrates the 90e birthday of the dead one: sculptures, bronzes, mouldings and original drawings of the artist enamel the visit.
On September 8th and 9th 2007, at the time of the days of the military Inheritance, the park of the castle accommodated a Napoleonean Bivouac: Infantry, Artillery and Cavalerie made it possible the public to go up 200 years behind when our regions lived under the French mode (the photographs are accessible via http://2dragons.be)
