Castle of Sarzay

The castle of Sarzay builds at the 14th century was imposing a medieval Forteresse including/understanding 38 turns and 3 Pont-levis. It is currently located in the Département of Indre.

Many furnished rooms preserved their authenticity. The top of the turns, where a superb frame is located, makes it possible to discover the beauty of the landscape. Restored deep ditches, the vault and the market supplement the beauty of the site.

History

This small village of the Berry acquired the title of City in 1300. The parish depended on the Archevêché of Bourges.

The seigniory of Sarzay belonged to the family of Barbançois since the medium of XIVe century. It is a family of knights whose wire were illustrated in the battles of the Guerre One hundred Year old. This family built the castle and until in about it 1720 remained owner; this seigniory was set up in Marquisat in 1651. At the beginning, it is about a Terre-plein surrounded by a ditch and defended by an enclosure of which there remains nothing any more but one turn-vault. In 1360, the lord of Sarzay, Guillaume de Barbançois, pared the English out of the town of Châtre, before plundering the city for its own account. Sarzay was in extreme cases of the kingdom of France, vis-a-vis Poitou, the Limousin and Aquitaine, possessions English. This seigniory belonged to the first line of defense of the kingdom. Towards 1440, Jean de Barbançois built a main building flanked of five turns, including one serving the stages. The turns are crowned of Mâchicoulis. It contained the English invasion. Left intact the one hundred year old war, of the wars of religion, the Sling, the Revolution, it is today one of the monuments most photographed.

For the little story, in 1538, in a duel legal, Hélin de Barbançois, 70 years old killed François of Saint-Julien, under the eye astonished by François I {{er}}.

The building was used as framework with George Sand for her novel the Miller of Angibault .

Today

The castle was repurchased with the beginning of the year 1980 by a family which ensured the restoration of the ditches, the construction of markets (on a medieval model), the restoration of dependences to make of it rooms of hosts and a rural lodging.
