Castle of Saint-Just
the Castle of Saint-Just is located in the commune of Saint-Just in the the Eure.
A first castle is built in XIIIe century (remaining substructures). Towards the end of XVIe century, Jacques de Croixmare makes build a new residence. A state of the goods of the stronghold of Saint-Just, drawn up in 1608, mentions a manor, commun runs, an orangery, a garden, a kitchen garden, etc; the field still includes/understands a planted avenue of elms, vines, two mills, a vault, cultivable grounds (A.N.).
In 1654, the last descendants of the family of Croixmare sell the field to Jean de Savary, Ecuyer, Secrétaire of the King and Grand Main of National Forestry Commission of Normandy. Jean de Savary and his descendants transform the park into garden with the Frenchwoman, create water the circuit, the vegetable garden. The plan of 1744 gives an idea of the castle and its park in the middle of the XVIIIe century.
In 1775, the castle is sold to the duke of Penthièvre, also owner of the Château of Bizy, with Vernon. It acquires probably also the close field (known as Château of the Rock), until there distinct property. The duke transforms the home into hospital and convalescent home for the old servants with his service; for this purpose, the building undergoes important installations. In the park, it makes build the dairy, a factory and probably the refrigerator; it still makes build the large commun run and an infirmary (building now integrated in the property close to the Rock). The old people's home functions until the death of the duke of Penthièvre, in 1793.
The field is then sold like Bien national. Owner of 1795 to 1798, Sebastien-Gilles Huet de Guerville makes bury his wife in the park, by re-using the elements of the mausoleum of Lancelot of Garenne (1595), coming from the church of Mercey. In 1805, Victor Fanneau of Horie, owner since 1798, resells the castle with the Suchet Knight, who resells it with his brother, marshal and Duc of Albufera. Louis Gabriel Suchet, Receiver of the general rights of Normandy, then To advise State, starts by replanting the avenue which leads to the castle in 1810; for the elms of the XVIIe century, it substitutes poplars. From 1816, the marshal undertakes great Saint-Just work: distribution and decoration of the ground floor of the home by the Lacornée architect, réameublement (furniture of time Worsens), new drawing of the park. Among the various gardeners whom he engages, Belguise profits already from a certain reputation: in 1825, it redraws part of the park in garden with English the.
The whole of the buildings is given in state. Following the death of the marshal in 1826, his widow divides the property and sells the field close to the Château of the Rock, composed of the vault, the " house of Osmont" , the infirmary and part of the landscaped garden; it becomes again then distinct from the Castle of Saint-Just. Since 1885, the castle is with the hands of the same family, which endeavoured to give the park in state: in 1893, the avenue is replanted in plane trees; in 1905, the water part is quarry; the goulettes, disappeared under limestone and the ground, are released and given out of water (1935). In 1904, the left wing of the castle is cut down. Wood contiguous, or large park, formerly integral part of the field, belong today to another owner.
