Castle of Rochecourbon

The Château of Rochecourbon is located on the commune of Saint-Porchaire; its name is also written Roche Courbon (in two words).

Pierre Loti went often on vacation in his/her sister in Saintonge. At the time of its stroll, it (Re) discovered the castle of Rochecourbon , with the abandonment, in ruins, in the middle of the undergrowth. Benefitting from its notoriety, Pierre Loti made it possible to save wood surrounding and made known this castle, going until calling it the “castle of Sleeping Beauty”.

Paul Chénereau bought then made restore the field giving again his splendor of antan to him. It is currently his/her son-in-law and his daughter who live it. Built in XVe century on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the marshes, this strong castle was transformed into elegant residence by Jean-Louis de Courbon, during the XVIIe century. As the marquis did not emigrate at the time of the French revolution the castle was not sold like national good. His/her Charlotte daughter married an aide-de-camp of Napoleon. Very extravagant, it will be ruined and the castle will be abandoned during a hundred year.

Since the terrace Rebirth, a staircase with double stage led to splendid gardens with the Frenchwoman on Piloti S: orchard, flowered garden, geometrical floors and lawns frame a water part.

Today, the castle of Rochecourbon is opened to the visitors and accommodates in particular many couples for the photographs of marriage.
