Castle of Ortenbourg
The Ortenbourg (or Ortenberg ) is, with the Ramstein, one of the two castles which dominate the commune of Scherwiller, located at 7 km of Sélestat, in the Département of the Low-Rhine. The ruins of the castle rise on a rock piton, to 437 m of altitude (latitude: 48º17' 44.9" ; longitude: 7º23' 30.1").
This castle holds its surname Ortenberg present at Scherwiller since the 10th century.
Current vestiges
The castle of Ortenbourg built out of smooth and white granite at the 13th century is an good example of military architecture of medieval Alsace. It still has a pentagonal Donjon of 32 m, a rampart of 17m provided with three lines of archères and a Logis seigneurial with Gothic windows. A large ditch separates it from the remainder of the mountain.
