Castle of Noirmoutier

The castle of Noirmoutier is a strong Château located on the Île of Noirmoutier in the department of the the Vendée. It dominates the town of Noirmoutier-in-the Island of its high keep of almost 20 meter. This castle is very well preserved and testifies to the medieval architecture of the 12th century.

History

The first traces of the castle appear in 830 with the construction of a castrum by the Abbé Hilbold, of the Monastère of Saint-Philbert. He was used to defend the monks and the population of the island against the Viking S.

The castle is rebuilt out of stone at the 12th century by the feudal capacity which tries to stabilize the area in particular by preventing Norman plunderings. The island then finds under the cut of the lords of Garnache. The Donjon is built by Pierre IV of Garnache, then an enclosure equipped with turns is built and surrounds the farmyard.

At the 14th century, the castle is held by the Famille of Trémoille, then Viscount of Thouars.

But in 1674, it is taken by the Dutch troops of the admiral Tromp.

In 1690, a house is built in the enclosure of the castle by the lord of Paunière, governor of the island and the castle. It made its residence of it.

The castle is sold in 1720 with Louis IV Henri de Bourbon-Cop which resells it in 1767 with Louis XV.

During the Revolution, the castle was used as military prison. In 1871, during the Common , of there insurgent was imprisoned.

Structure

The keep located at the center of the enclosure is massive and rectangular. It is built out of hardcore and comprises three stages whose last contains the habitat seigneurial. The keep is provided with many Meurtrière S and the defensive turrets for the angles. Today, it shelters the Musée of Noirmoutier.

The rectangular enclosure consists of two turns, only one door and two watch tower S with the four angles.
