Designation

History

In 1586, Henri III authorized Rene de Montesson to again strengthen its castle. At this point in time it dug the ditches, which one still built an enclosure flanked of turns today shaven to height of parapet, and which one built the square house, flanked of round turrets, which covered the close relation and his double drawbridge. Except that one of the 2 turrets is reduced like those of the enclosure, this châtelet is preserved with its verliculés ornaments, its modillons, its roofs with the distorted shapes, that of the house in contrecourbes on the 4 dimensioned, that of the turret remaining in the shape of strangled bell, then reinflated and almost spherical at the top. Horizontal loopholes order the accesses of the bridge. The work of Rene de Montesson was probably limited to this building.

The castle was however inhabited during most of the 17th century. But it should be believed that the lords of the manor were satisfied with the old home which is still seen in the enclosure of the ditches, altered at the time where the gate was built, and which probably underwent since many suppression.

In 1765, the castle is composed of a main building where there are cellar, kitchen, office, low room, high room, cabinet or house, and a vault; a small court with behind the icelle one, court-with-in front of in which are the stables, a built gate with dosme, two small towers beside icelluy; drawbridge under the gate, gardens holding to with it surrounded by walls with double ditches, one full of running water, the other dry one; a farmyard where is the house of the farmer, flees and dovecote; a paved stone alley which goes from the castle to the borough of Bais. . The manor was indeed to be rather modest, because in the expertise on the ground, in 1778, it is not, with its enclosure and its dependences, estimated that 5.050#, whereas the smallholding is worth 39.000 of them.

The inhabitants of the election of the Mans are discharged, the January 13rd 1597, of the price of corn found in the castles of Mayenne and Montesson, and that the Prince de Conti would have been abandoned to them. Perhaps the castle lately remparé of Rene de Montesson thus would have been visited, occupied, by the royal troops at the time of the last religious disorders.
