Castle of Lichtenberg

The castle of Lichtenberg is located in the Commune Frenchwoman of Lichtenberg and the department of the the Low-Rhine.

History

The Castle, an imposing fortress with the height of the ambitions of the Hanau-Lichtenberg, is distinguished from the others Château X of the the Vosges of North by its seven centuries long history, the importance of its vestiges and the exceptional quality of its landscape environment.

With the whole beginning of the 13th century, imposing a Donjon dominates already the the surrounding Vosges of North. Towards the end of the 16th century, its new owners, the counts de Hanau-Lichtenberg, make transform to them Château into powerful place-strong by famous architects. Among them, Daniel Specklin, architect of the town of Strasbourg.

Noncontent with essential work of fortification, Hanau-Lichtenberg attempt to insert in their residence the sumptuous decorations of the Reappearing Art. Windows in Oculus with the Italian manner, Pilaster S grooved, pediments, Volute S and Cariatide S come to decorate the imposing pink sandstone frontages. One century later, in October 1678, after a eight day old seat, the fortress capitulates. From now on royal place , it is integrated in the line of defense of the north-eastern border of the kingdom of France, and this to the following seat. At the evening of the August 9th 1870, the fortress falls under fire from the Artillerie Wurtemberg eoise, after a three days resistance. Gigantic a Incendie reduces it to the state of ruin.

Since 1993, an ambitious project of restoration and cultural development is engaged with conference rooms and of spectacles, of temporary exhibitions, a theater of outdoor, a teaching service. The Pavillon of the Ladies has just been finished.
