Castle of Laeken

The castle of Laeken , property of the royal Donation, is located in a bosky bower at the North of Brussels. Its greenhouses, built under the reign of the king Léopold II, are splendid and are open two weeks per annum to the public.

The castle and the greenhouses of Laeken are used as place with various receptions offered by the sovereigns. It is also there that place had the evening of engagement of the prince Philippe of Belgium and of Mathilde d' Udekem d' Acoz in 1999 and the Summit European of Laeken in 2001 in the presence of very many heads of state and government.

The castle of Laeken is also used as place of residence with certain family members royal. Of five years return of exile in Switzerland, the king Baudouin lived there throughout his reign (1951-1993). Its widow the queen Fabiola remained there until in 1998 before settling with the Château of Stuyvenberg. Currently, it is the crown prince Philippe, the Mathilde princess and their three children (Elisabeth, Gabriel and Emmanuel) who occupy since 1999 the private apartments of the first stage.
