Castle of Lacoste

The castle of Lacoste or Coste is located at Lacoste in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Site

It is posed on the top of an extension of the northern side of small the Luberon on which the village is posed. This position offers to its occupants superb sights on the plain of Bonnieux, the Monts of Vaucluse with in background the Mont Ventoux and the the Alps.

History

Its origin is 11th century, largely modified thereafter.

There a long time remained the property of the family of the Simiane, then of the grandfather of the Marquis de Sade. In 1771, the Marquis flees Paris and the scandals caused by its writings and its manners libertines to take refuge then in the castle.

With the Revolution, the castle is vandalisé and destroyed mainly. The materials which composed it are resold for other constructions.

It is currently in the course of restoration by Pierre Cardin.
