Castle of Hohenstein

The castle of Hohenstein is located on the heights of the road which leads Oberhaslach to Wangenbourg, not far from the Château of Nideck, in Alsace.

Built at the beginning of the 13th century, the site extends on a rocky outcrop at an altitude from 440 Mr. the castle was built by the family of Hohenstein and the bishop of Strasbourg was one of the joint owners at the end of the 13th century. The bishop Berthold de Bucheck was retained prisoner with the castle in 1337 by Rodolphe de Hohenstein. With his release, the bishop took the castle which will not be raised any more its ruins.
