Castle of Haut-Ribeaupierre

The castle of the Haut-Ribeaupierre (Hohrappolstein) is one of the three castles (with the Girsberg and the Saint-Ulrich) which dominate the commune of Ribeauvillé, in the Haut-Rhin. Located at 642 m of altitude (latitude: 48º12' 20.1" ; longitude: 7º18' 20.3" , it dominates the two others. It is the oldest castle of the Ribeaupierre since its existence is announced as of 1084. It would have been built on an old Roman site. Known under the name of " Altenkastel" it is Anselme of Ribeaupierre which takes possession of this castle towards 1288. Towards 1368, Brunon de Ribeaupierre becomes owner of the castle. Dedicating a wild hatred with English, it locks up in his keep the knight John Harleston of 1384 with 1387 which had had misfortune to parade in the area with except imperial conduit. It releases it only against one strong ransom and following strong pressure of the empire. At the end of the XIIIe century it became a residence of Ribeaupierre. Another prisoner of mark will be locked up in the keep of Haut-Ribeaupierre in 1477. It is the subject currently of consolidations.
