Castle of Haut-Barr

The castle of Haut-Barr (in German Hohbarr ) is located in the Commune Frenchwoman of Saverne, in the department of the the Low-Rhine. In Saverne, to follow RN 4 then D 171.

History

Built in 1170, it is transformed and restored at the 14th century. The first part of the Château is built at the beginning of the 12th century, in sandstone, with 458 meters of Altitude. It is set up to supervise the Vallée Zorn and the Plaine of Alsace by the bishops of Srasbourg. Thus it is called " the eye of the Alsace " by the Of Strasbourg. The prince-voter of Westphalia orders the destruction of several Château X of which it forms part, but during the War of succession of Spain, the soldiers decide to reinstate the fortress. The Château is abandoned towards 1770, but it continues to be occupied until the French revolution.

This powerful fortress of the bishops of Strasbourg is set up on an impressive bar of conglomerate sandy made up of three rocks allowing them a control on the the Vosges of North. This morphology confers the characteristics of a to him castle-bars . The Chapelle castrale is composed of a Nef Romance E and of a Gothic chorus with Oriel. Many other vestiges such as the turn of Artillery, its embrasures of shooting, its Fenêtre S with Pilastre S are interesting.
