Castle of Doors
Located on the commune of Doors in the Gard, this castle supervised the old way (or sees) known as Regordane which the pilgrims of Saint-Gilles and the Crusaders borrowed towards the Holy Land on ten miles. The Anduze, the Randon and the Polignac will pay homage to the abbot of Saint-Pierre-of-Safe for this castle of XIe in XIVe century.
Raymond Guillaume de Budos, nephew of the pope Clement V, buys the seigniory in 1322, increases the castle and flanks it at least two turns. In 1384, Thibaud de Budos recovers the castle, removed with his/her André father who had taken the party of the English at the beginning of the One hundred Year old War.
The seigniory becomes increasingly rich and powerful until Louis XIII sets up it in Marquisat in favor of Antoine Hercules de Budos with which one undoubtedly owes the New Castle. His/her father is bishop of Agde, one of his sisters, duchess of Montmorency, another, abbess of “the Abbey of the Ladies” of Caen. Brigadier, it is killed with the seat of Privas in 1629. His/her daughter, Marie-Félice, leave the castle in heritage with her nephew, the Prince de Conti, in 1693, that its descendant sells with Louis XVI in 1781.
With the Revolution, the good is nationalized and sold to six successive owners. It leads in 1841 between the hands of the family of Vernède which will make then restore the monument in bad condition.
Following the intensive exploitation of the coal mines under the site, the grounds crumble causing the ruin of the castle, evacuated in 1929, and the demolition of the village rebuilt 300 m further. About 1960, the grounds are stabilized. In 1969, an association is created in order to save the castle, classified historic building in 1984.
The castle constitutes a single architectural testimony in Europe because of sound spur with 49 degrees, in form of Proue which was worth the nickname " to him; a vessel in Cévennes".
