Castle of Digoine

The Château of Digoine is located on the commune of Palinges, in Saône-et-Loire, on a light nipple dominating left bank of the Bourbince.

Description

This castle of the 18th century is partly the work of the architect Edme Verniquet. At the 19th century, it was ornamented decorations of Clodion (watery decorations). It is decorated of a small private theater called to Italian, decorated by Cicéri and snuffed as well by Offenbach as by Sarah Bernhardt. Its circular library of inspiration Néo-gothique is remarkable.

This fore-part comprises, at the ground floor, six columns with ionic capitals, on the floor, six columns with composite capitals and the stage-attic, of the pilasters with deteriorated Corinthian capitals, the whole being crowned trophies. The balconies consist of a slightly curved composite entablature in the center and wrought iron support-body.
  • Southern part, the frontage is animated by a crowned hardly projecting central fore-part of a triangular pediment very low whose tympanum is carved of armoiries.
  • the large hall of entry, paved black and white marble, is decorated with low-reliefs representing of the watery divinities and stone benches resting on legs of lion. The living rooms have woodworks of style Louis XIV. In one of the turns, a library of Style troubadour, with woodworks in magnifying glass of elm and a marble chimney, was arranged towards 1825. The theater has a circular ceiling whose decoration makes alternate candelabra, garlands of flowers, musical instruments, cherubs and winged monsters carrying of the armorial bearings, with which the white balcony and gold are also provided.
  • a broad alley, between two punctuated floors of cut boxwood grass, separates the Southern frontage from the grid of entry. A vast landscaped garden of 35 hectares, a garden with the Frenchwoman and a greenhouse dating from the 19th century as well as a pond of 5 hectares supplement the ensemble.
Castle (MH) is a Private property. It is opened with the public.

History

The castle was successively the residence of the families of Digoine, of Damas, Reclesne , Coste Messelière and Moreton de Chabrillan .
  • 10th century: the family of Digoine builds a strong house on a mound and equips it with a grant fine turn
  • 13th century: the stronghold escapes vassalage from the count de Clermont, lord of Charolles
  • 1481: Christian of Digoine , last male representative of this family to have the castle, is decapitated to have taken the party of Marie of Burgundy; his/her only daughter, Anne of Digoine , carries all her goods to Jean of Damas of Marcilly , which she had married in 1472
  • 1700: after the Damas , the field is sold by decree with François de Reclesne
  • 1709: after having shaved the old fortress, the son of the precedent, Claude-Éléonore de Reclesne the construction of a new castle
  • 1770 undertakes: completion of construction by the girl of the precedent, Jacqueline-Éléonore de Reclesne , wife of Louis Frottier of revolutionary Coste-Messelière
  • age: their heiress, Marie-Elisabeth , do not emigrate and transmit by marriage the family inheritance to Jacques-Henri-César de Moreton-Chabrillan , with which one owes part of the interior decoration and installations external
  • 1908: Philibert the One-eyed one, baron d' Ideville , remote cousin of the last of the Chabrillan which had died unmarried and it had taken the continuation, disappears without direct heir
