Castle of Crèvecœur

The ruins of the castle of Crèvecoeur , located in Wallonia in the old commune of Bouvignes-on-Meuse (Dining), Province of Namur, are the last vestiges of an old Belgian fortress .

The roots of this castle go up extremely far in time. Indeed the Romans had already raised there a castrum which was then consolidated by the Norman ones at the 9th century. However they are the counts de Namur which at the beginning of the 12th century made a frightening fortress of it. In 1176, Henri the 1st Blind man still supplemented the defensive system by the addition of a flanked wall several turns.

Just like that of Dining, the castle of Crèvecoeur succumbed at the time of the seat carried out in 1554 by the king Henri II of France, then in conflict with Charles Quint.

It is at the time of the tragic last moments of this memorable seat that three ladies taking part in the defense of Bouvignes would have thrown top of the most tower to escape the invaders. This heroic fact is still commemorated each year in the old parish of Bouvignes.
