Castle of Commercy
Castle located at Commercy, in the department of the Meuse, built at the 18th century for Charles Henri of Lorraine by German Boffrand on the vestiges of an old medieval castle. The regent of the duchies, born Elisabeth Charlotte of Orleans, made his residence of it when it obtained the sovereignty of the principality in 1737. The castle and its gardens are famous to have been one of the favorite residences of Stanislas Leszczyński.
In 1766 is made the annexation of the duchies of Lorraine and Bar by the Royaume of France, following the death of Stanislas. His son-in-law and heir, the king Louis XV orders the abandonment of the castle.
The gardens disappear quickly and the castle is left a long time in ruin. Following the damage related to the Second world war, the frontages side city were entirely restored leaving room to the majestic place in the horseshoe shape.
