History
The castle was built in 1132 per Jean de Chaudenay for his son Jehan junior who in taken possession in 1175 and becomes `Jean I of Châteauneuf'. Vis-a-vis the threats of the War One hundred Year old, the lords of Châteauneuf build then the powerful enclosure around the Donjon of the 12th century. The reign of the family is completed after 9 generations with a fine tragedy in 1456 when Catherine de Châteauneuf, last heiress, is burned alive for the poisoning of its second husband, Jacques d' Haussonville. In 1457, Philippe the Good, duke of Burgundy, then allots the fortress to its adviser Philippe Pot, also knight of the Ordre of the Golden Fleece and knight of Saint-Michel. This one then modifies the installation of the castle to make of it a more comfortable residence and which corresponds more with the records which had course at the court of the Ducs of Burgundy. Thus, a vault and the home going back to this time were carried out in the court of the castle, in the architectural style blazing Gothique. One can find at multiple places the currency of Philippe Pot “So much L Valt”. To died from Philippe Pot in 1493, this last not having a descent, the castle returns to his/her brother Guy Pot, then via various alliances, in Marie Liesse of Luxembourg. At its entry with the convent, the castle passes to Charles of Vienna, count de Commarin, to remain in the hands of this family during 150 years. In 1767, Louis Henri of Vienna separates from the building, selling it to a banking rich person.
At the time of the French revolution, all the royal symbols and armorial bearings are degraded or destroyed. The castle is then sold with the biddings and will pass then with hands in hands until in 1936 when the count Georges de Vogüe gives the fortress to the State and that Châteauneuf and its village are declared site protected.
