Castle of Castelnaud-the-Vault
The Castle of Castelnaud, 13th century 14th century, classified, worth visiting, perched on escarpée bank of the Dordogne and supervising its confluence with Céou, restored: vestiges 13th century, altered 13th century 14th century, keep 14th century, gross tower 14th century.
The Castle of Castelnaud mentioned at the 12th century; taken by Simon IV of Montfort in 1214; occupied by the English at the 15th century; transformed into quarry stone at the 19th century.
The Château of Castelnaud is a medieval fortress with Castelnaud-the-Vault in the Dordogne. It is drawn up opposite the Château of Beynac, its rival at the time of the Guerre One hundred Year old.
The older mentions of the castle date from the 13th century. He played a part in the crusade against the Cathares and the Guerre One hundred Year old. After the Moyen-âge the castle was given up little by little and since the French revolution, it was a ruin.
Today, the castle is a Musée of the medieval war. Reconstitutions on a part scale of medieval Artillery: Pierrière, Mangonneau, Precision balance and bombards are exposed in its enclosure.
