Castle of Bourscheid

The strong Château of Bourscheid is located at the Luxembourg on a rock headland which overhangs the Sûre of 150 meters. Of triangular form, it is accessible only by one with dimensions: in the North-West.

About the year 1000, a wood fort is transformed into strong stone castle (the excavations made it possible to update Roman structures, mérovingiennes Carolingian and Ottoniennes).

Of this first stone construction there remains only the enclosing keep and wall girdling the higher castle. The external enclosure, with its 8 turns is completed in 1384.

This same year, the house of Stolzemburg is carried out to improve comfort of the lord. This residence will be then elevated to reach 10 meters (4 stages), without the attics.

In 1477 the current farmyard is built. It makes it possible to better protect the single access to the castle: construction of a large gate protected by external palisades, a large artillery bastion and a flanked ditch of 4 turns with drawbridge.

In 1512 the Bourscheid family dies out fault of direct heir. The new lords arrange new home and in 1650 the vault (disappeared today) is increased.

In 1812 the castle is put at the biddings whereas it is already in a state of advanced decay. In 1936, the ruins of the castle are classified historic buildings and the Luxembourg state acquires them in 1972.

The house of Stolzemburg is then rebuilt and the covered towers. Consolidation work is still currently in hand.
