Castle of Birkenfels
The castle of Birkenfels is a castle built towards 1260 in the forest of Obernai, on the commune of Ottrott (the Low-Rhine) by Burkhard Beger, vassal of the bishop of Strasbourg.
History
The castle of Birkenfels belonged to Beger until in 1532, then with the family of Mundolsheim until the French revolution. The castle fell in ruins after the Guerre Thirty Years and was yielded to the town of Obernai. It henceforth forms part of the undivided forest of Obernai- Bernardswiller. It made it possible before to supervise the old Roman road energy of the Mont Sainte-Odile to the Champ of Fire and the valley of the Bruche.The monument is classified historic building since 1984.
