Castle of Belcastel

The Château of Belcastel is a medieval masonry located at Belcastel in the Département of Aveyron, on northern bank of the river Aveyron, downstream from Rodez. The castle is located in a site registered at the inventory of the historic buildings since the interval wars. Until the architect Fernand Pouillon (1912 - 1986) discovers it in 1974 in a very advanced state of ruin, this castle of the Moyen-âge (of which the foundations would go back to) had been abandoned with its fate since at least it. During the French revolution, the castle and its surroundings were used a time as refuge with Pierre Firmin Marie de Barrau, noble aveyronnais tracked by the authorities. With, Fernand Pouillon undertook to restore it.

Fernand Pouillon had undertaken to also restore the village which was itself in a very bad condition. He started with a small house above the castle, and he had also consolidated the majority of the other ruins of the village which were then repurchased by the commune in particular thanks to European funds to be restored and rented at the year.

This imposing castle was the residence of the family of Saunhac. It is opened with the public of at the beginning of April until mid-November.
