Castle of Angers

The Château of Angers is located in the town of Angers in the department of the Maine-et-Loire, in France.

The fortress, on a schist headland slater which dominates the Maine, was one of the sites occupied by the Roman Empire because of its strategic defensive position.

During the 9th century the fortress passed under the authority of the counts d' Anjou. It is conquered in 1204 by Philippe II. The built massive ramparts of 1230 with 1240 on the initiative of Saint Louis have a circumference of approximately 650 m length and are flanked of 17 turns. Northern side, the precipice of the plate is such as the architects did not considered to be necessary to supplement defenses.

During the wars of religion, Henri III gave the order to shave the place so that it does not fall between the hands from the Protestants. One began with découronner the turns, but work was stopped. One then decided to establish at their tops of the artillery terraces.

The beginning of messidor year I (at the end of June 1793) the Vendéens fail to invest the fortified town.

During the Second world war the allied bombardments touch an ammunition dump whose explosion damages the ramparts.

The castle shelters today the Tapisserie of the Apocalypse, celebrates hanging dating from the Middle Ages, reporting the Apocalypse according to Jean Saint; hanging carried out by the royal liquid manure Nicolas Battles on drawings of Hennequin of Bruges.

Remarks concerning the castle of Angers: it should be noted how this castle (famous as one of most impregnable of France) was taken only one and single time in its history, because of 2 men alone! The deep ditches which ring the castle not having never been flooded in spite of the joint presence of Maine (the castle however having been built close to this water point in optics to derive its course) obviously facilitated this intrusion. As regards the ditches, they sheltered a collection of wild animals on the other hand (lions, panthers, wolves, bear…) as well as raptors. The town of Angers has besides the project to give to the last style the fauconnery, if expensive with famous the " Good king Rene " as of the summer 2007. The municipality has besides now-and-already acquires of 2 raptors.
