Castle William
Castle William was a fort located on the island of Castle Island in the port of Boston at the the United States.
In 1634, the governor of the colony of bay of Massachusetts, Thomas Dudley, chooses Castle Island to build coastal defenses of Boston there. The first fortifications were out of ground and included/understood two platforms of three guns. A fort of wood is set up there in 1644 then increased in 1653. The fort completely burned in 1673 and was quickly replaced by a new structure.
In 1701, begins the construction of a brick fort, to four Bastion S, armed with 72 guns, which will be generally called Castle William , according to William III off Orange, king d' Angleterre. In 1775, at the beginning of the Guerre of independence of the United States of America, when the British troops evacuated Boston, they destroyed the fortifications of the island which were repaired soon by the troops of the Lieutenant-colonel Paul Revere.
The president John Adams, ordered construction, in 1799, again extremely on the island, named Fort Independence which was completed in 1803.
